How to focus better!

Are you having trouble focusing on a particular task? You might be facing trouble while studying, working or even while you’re practising a hobby! There are many ways to overcomes this. But here are a few basic tips that will help you stay on track.

First, prepare your mind to perform the task. Tell yourself you need so many minutes or hours to finish this task at hand.

Motivate yourself to see it through with the thought of achieving the feeling of successfully completing something. Next, prioritize your subtasks. Maybe you need to work on some parts of your project first – finish those and set the base for the remaining tasks.

Take a break when you feel distracted or when you have that first yawn! Don’t forget to spoil yourself with sugary treats or coffee to keep yourself active. If you’re on a diet, some fruits might provide the energy you need.

If you’re in an environment that is too hot or cold, try to set the temperature right so that you are comfortable because this is a huge factor when it comes to being able to focus! Take short breaks, listen to music if that’s your thing or try doodling for five to ten minutes in between just to let off some steam.

Lastly, have faith in yourself – that you will see this through. You will surely be able to focus better!

Mind Exercises

Do you often feel that you are drained emotionally and mentally? Are you unable to focus on your tasks? Do you often forget about where you left things? Perhaps a few mind exercises can help sort you out! Try testing your recall memory by making a list of things to do, or a grocery list – and memorize it. After an hour or more, try to recall the items. This is a great way to stimulate your mental energy. If you love music, learn to play an instrument. It is a known fact that learning something new or complex for a span of time can help the aging mind. Not into instruments? How about cooking, or learning a new language! It’s possible! You can also try counting in your head rather than on your fingers!

When children are young, they play many games to improve their mental abilities through mind exercises – word games, memory games, strategy games. It is important to practice these things even as we grow. It is now an accepted fact that even video games improve our mental reflexes. So take so time out to game once in a while! Or if you want something a little more quiet, why not try painting, yoga, gold, or knitting. Your mind is a powerful tool when it is trained in the right way. Pick out your favorite mind exercises and try to keep your mind just as active as your body!

Time flies when you’re having fun.

Have you noticed how quickly time passes when you’re having a good time? You want to bottle that time and save it so you can cherish those moments forever. You never want a happy moment to pass! But on most days you find that time is crawling and the clock is ticking endlessly. Perhaps you’re stuck in a lecture, or at work on a slow day. In moments like these, you wish time flew by faster.

This is a huge mistake! Why would you want to give up something that you can never get back? Every second matters. When you think time is going too slowly, it merely means than you aren’t engaged in something that you like doing, or you’re bored. When this happens, it’s time to take a walk, get some fresh air, call a friend and have a pointless chat about old times!

Time needs to be cherished and utilized in such a way that when you look back at life you don’t regret having wasted your time by wishing time was over! The next time you feel like time is passing too slowly, think about the fact that this time will never come back to you. Draw that picture you are envisioning, eat the yummy pizza, go for that fifteen minute jog you’ve been prolonging, rather than sitting around and cursing the clock for boring you.

Time is the most precious thing on earth and we are the only species that knows we have limited time. Let’s make our lives worth living by using time efficiently and passionately! It’s time to enjoy the time you have left.

Why worry?

Worry is normal. Anxiety is common. Paranoia is a part of our lives. But do we spend too much time worrying and focusing on the negative? Most people do! Worrying is healthy to a certain extent – a mother worries about her child who is travelling alone and would probably make a few calls to them in case they haven’t reported that they’ve reached their destination. This ensures that the child is safe. This type of worry is instinctive and it has purpose.

But what about worrying about the future? What about worrying about how your child’s life would be after 15 years? This type of worry is unnecessary, time consuming and damaging. It influences decisions you make for today and although this may seem like the right thing – it’s not. Worry shouldn’t consume your life to an extent that it makes things worse! In worrying about your child’s future, you may overprotect them to an extent that they cannot fend for themselves without your support. Or they may become rebellious and disturbed and turn against you.

Worry is harmful and it spreads negativity to another person. A colleague or friend who constantly worries and complains may initially derive sympathy or consolation from people around them. After a couple of days, their energy seems to drain everyone and nobody wants to be around them. Are you this type of person? If you are, then your ‘worries’ are the main reason why nobody wants to be around you. But that’s not all, worrying and stress will make you stop enjoying your own company. The thoughts in your head will be so overbearing that you can’t spend time alone or if you do, you try to fill it with habits that are repetitive and destructive to your inner peace and mental health. To get rid of worry, try to meditate everyday. Believe in the goodness of people and trust in yourself. Life is full of ups and downs but it is best to always look on the bright side. So don’t worry, be happy!


The power of expectations and positive thinking

For centuries, humans have believed in the power of the mind over body. Our families and friends always tell us to ‘be positive’ and there is a reason behind it. Staying positive and having happy thoughts not only keeps you refreshed and inspired through your days and nights. It also enable others around you to absorb your positive energy. So where do expectations come into play? When you are always expecting the worst to happen, you are edgy, you are stressed and you drown in worry constantly.

You are always defensive because you think you need to prepare for the worst. While focusing on the negative, you allow the true beauty of life to pass you by.

Moments that could have made you happy are completely overlooked because you are only staring at the single problem in front of you. When you have positive expectations, you take things lightly and you learn to improvise when things get rough. When you expect the best to happen, you bring out the best in yourself and allow time for being in the ‘here’ and ‘now’, rather than fluttering away to a stressful moment that doesn’t actually exist.

If you expect to not get a job when you step in for an interview, you will most likely not get that job. If you expect that you can do your best in order to get the job, you will most probably get your dream job, provided you have the talent and experience to back you up. Expectations shouldn’t be too far fetched. You can’t wake up today expecting to buy a plane in the evening. But you can expect to visit a friend or two, complete a goal you’ve been working on for days, or perhaps win a competition that means a lot to you!

While you set expectations, make sure they are realistic and more importantly, make sure that they are positive. People always tell you to expect the unexpected. Let the unexpected be something that makes you happy in life. Believe in yourself, and watch the world change around you.

The Buddhist Philosophy of calmness

Calmness is a state of mind that is devoid of agitation, excitement or disturbance. The Buddhist philosophy advocated ‘mindful’ living for attaining wellness and calmness. Here are a few things that can help us practise calmness in the mad rush of this world:

Letting Go: Buddhism asserts that the primary source of all suffering is attachment to negative emotions like fear, anger and hate. Having a non-judgemental outlook towards life and people helps greatly in this regard. Just let the negative feelings go and restores our ability to see clearly.

Living in the moment: Nothing can be done about the past and the future is not known. Now – the present moment- is all that we have and we should be immersing our mind only in this moment. Whatever little things you are doing, be completely and mindfully present in that moment.

Take it slow: Do not surrender to the mad rush of the world. Take you own sweet time to do little things like drinking coffee or cooking. Forget multi-tasking and concentrate on just one task at a time and put your whole mind to it. This deliberate choice of slowing down will enhance your appreciation of life and bring calmness to you.

Cultivating understanding and compassion: Buddhism teaches us to have a good understanding of our own selves and the world around us. Harbouring feeling of compassion towards others and submerging feelings of hatred or anger is sure to calm your mind.

What causes lack of motivation?

You bulging belly makes you cringe but you cannot find the motivation to hit the gym. You know you do better by starting your own business rather than being in service, but you do not know how that will happen. Motivation is a thing that we constantly seek to achieve greater things in life and become our better selves. But what causes lack of it? Here are a few answers:

Fear of failure: Perhaps the biggest hindrance in being motivated is the fear of failure. Most of us are taught from childhood to be perfectionists. Failures and mistakes make us feel flawed. In order to achieve great things, readiness to take on failures is crucial.

Low self esteem: People with low self esteem think that they do not deserve success. They make half-hearted attempts at everything and procrastination is their habit. They cannot find motivation in anything and in fact try to run away from it.

Habit of procrastination: This habit of procrastinating things and activities for future is another cause of lack of motivation. Procrastination may be because of depression, low self esteem or fear of failure.

Depression: Depression is the new age disease that is cause of several underlying problems. Lack of interest in activities is a common cause of depression and people with depression do not want to do absolutely anything. Treatment of depression is possible and it brings about sea changes in productivity and motivation.

Chronic people pleasing: If you are busy pleasing people all the time, you will have no time for yourself, your thoughts or your dreams. Motivation will vanish from your plan of things. One must be vary of individual needs and try to balance their needs with that of other people.

Inner Peace

You keep hearing how important mental health and inner peace are for living a healthy and long life. But do you know that inner peace can be cultivated by following certain habits daily? Here are a few of them:

  1. Be Thankful: Before you begin your day, thank God for being alive and be grateful for another precious day. Thank Him all through the day for little things like when your children come back from school, when you get your pay check in your account, etc.
  2. Check your mind: If your mind wanders towards negative things and feelings, check it by affirming a positive thought. If your mind starts to feel negatively about someone, bring your mind to stop thinking about that person and concentrate on something positive like listening to music or reading a book.
  3. Be kind and considerate to others: Practice being consistently kind to people around you. Always be willing to help and share. A kind person derives immense satisfaction for his small acts of kindness and revels in immense inner peace.
  4. Value time: Procrastination is one thing that is eats away our inner peace like termites eats wood. Time is precious and one should value it enough not to waste it. Do your things on time and see yourself becoming more content and at peace with yourself.
  5. Sit in silence: Sitting in silence for a few minutes during the day and just enjoying your own company will calm your mind greatly and contribute to your inner peace.

Can Faith and Fear co-exist?

Fear is a thing all of have experienced. Faith too. But can faith and exist simultaneously? The answer is no. The word ‘fear’ has negative connotations and non-productive ramifications. Faith, on the other hand, is considered with everything positive. Buddha has rightly said that “ If your believe in God out of fear, your faith has no foundation.

Fear is a forced emotion that no one likes to experience. Faith is a welcome emotion that pulls us. Just like fear and love are poles apart, so are faith and fear. One cannot love god completely if one fears Him. If one loves God out of fear, there will always be some kind of reservation in this relationship. To have faith in God is to love him without any fear, without any coercion.

Love is the foundation of life. To love and to be loved is the crux of human existence.  So love should be the only cardinal emotion while believing in the Supreme Power.

In the words of poet W.B Yeats, “The God that frightens is no god/ the god that loves, lives a heavenly abode”. If we love and worship God out of fear, then we are desecrating God and his boundless love for us.

God does take each one of us through adverse and fearful situations. But with a strong faith, it is becomes possible for us to overcome those adversities and fears. A strong faith casts out all feelings of fear. In short, faith is the antidote to fear.

Self love

You live with yourself, in your body, watching and expressing your thoughts and emotions. You love many things about yourself and also hate as many. But self love- appreciation of your own self and self acceptance – is one thing that will help you glide through life smoothly. Self love involves giving utmost respect to your own self and reminding yourself that you are worthy of all the happiness in the world. In the words of Oscar Wilde, “To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance”.  Here are four self love techniques:

  1. Clear your mind: All of us have some basic value system and beliefs. They might change with time but the core of these values remains the same. Never get taken away by others’ beliefs and values. Cling onto to yours firmly.
  2. Listen to your inner voice: Mind is a tricky little thing. It sways to and fro in fractions of second. Be conscious of how you treat your own self in your mind and train your mind to be attracted to positive thoughts.
  3. Self Care: Self care is an important aspect of self love. Balanced diet, exercise, positive thinking, adequate rest, healthy social interactions are a few things that will provide you with optimum energy and pave way for self love.
  4. Set boundaries: Stay away from people you disrespect you and put you down. You deserve to be treated right and with honour. Stay in company of right and appreciative people who bring out the best in you.
